Shana Cooperstein from the MA program in Art History, curated a show of works by five Tyler Photography MFA students. The show, titled "Sub-Contracted," featured works by Dimitra Ermeidou, Cally Iden, Amy Harblias, Sharon Koelblinger and Julia Staples.
The show reflects the contemporary tendency to acknowledge photography’s diverse uses throughout history, highlighting the widespread interest in and visual affinities current artistic approaches share with early technical utilities. Furthermore, closer inspection of each artist’s practice in relation to photography’s initial services or operations intimates not only a curiosity about, but a critique of the way early uses shaped prevalent conceptions of the medium, such as its documentary or objective qualities.
The show ran from July 16-28 at Parsons The New School for Design.
