How Temple spent its summer vacation

Gina Benigno
The Cecil B. Moore subway station got a Temple-style makeover this summer.
  • Making a commercial. Stella is a star! The newest Temple University commercial is airing nationally on BET, Bravo, Comedy Central, MTV and the Cartoon Network, among other stations. In the meantime, check it out here.

  • Taking over the Cecil B. Moore subway station. Temple now dominates the station, so you’ll never miss your stop again. Watch a time-lapse video of some of the new signage being installed.

  • Showing off to prospective students. Owl Ambassadors gave tours to more than 6,500 prospective students, along with their families and friends, some of whom braved 90 degree heat to check out Temple’s beautiful campus. Speaking of which…

  • Getting some work done. There are buildings coming down to make room for new ones, including a state-of-the-art library; 20 bike-repair stations were installed; and there’s lots of landscaping going on. Read more about the many new renovations and construction projects, and use this handy map to navigate Liacouras Walk while it’s getting a makeover.

  • Making research breakthroughs. It turns out there's an actual reason why it feels good to scratch an itch. Who knew? Temple researchers, who were also busy investigating how Uber is reducing the number of drinking and driving deaths and how to increase the speed of computers.

  • Hanging with tomorrow’s Owls. Temple was teeming with students attending summer camps of all kinds, from the Fran Dunphy Basketball Camp to Screenwriting for Teens to a camp where crazy-smart kids made mock Mars landers out of Styrofoam and drinking straws.

  • Reaping what you sowed. That garden isn’t going to weed itself, so thank Mother Nature student volunteers were here over the summer tending the Temple Community Garden. Make that gardens; there’s now a second plot at Diamond and Carlisle streets, just steps away from the original at Diamond and Broad.

  • MCing American Idol. More than 5,000 dreamers from across the country lined up outside the Liacouras Center as early as 4 a.m. on Aug. 2 hoping to sing their way onto the series’ final season, premiering in January 2016.
