More than a dozen honor students from Girard College visited Temple Tuesday as part of Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter's initiative to motivate city residents to pursue and complete college.

The high school juniors, who arrived with the mayor by bus, visited Paley Library, Alter Hall and the Tech Center on a tour led by Owl Ambassador David Lopez.

Following the tour, the students gathered in the 1810 Liacouras conference suite, where they had the opportunity to ask questions of Temple Student Government officers Ugo Obilo, vice president of services, and Elliot Griffin, vice president of external affairs.

Now beginning his second term as Philadelphia mayor, Nutter held the event to reinforce his commitment to education as a top priority of his administration. The city’s new Philly Goes to College initiative aims to increase college attainment by emphasizing the importance of higher education and the attractiveness of Philadelphia as a place to pursue college and sustain a career.

Located just blocks from Temple's Main Campus, Girard College is a boarding school for academically capable students in grades first through 12th from families headed by a single parent or guardian.
