President Theobald discusses Temple Option on Bloomberg TV

Ryan S. Brandenberg
President Theobald has been a voice for alternative admissions, understanding that standardized test scores may not reflect a student's full potential.

Last Friday, Temple University President Neil D. Theobald visited Bloomberg’s offices in New York City to meet with higher-education reporter Janet Lorin, one of the leading voices in the national media covering student debt, admissions and financial aid.

Theobald and Lorin took a brief break from their discussion about trends in college access and completion to tape a Bloomberg Television interview on the Temple Option, the university’s new admissions alternative that opens doors to a college education for students who don’t perform well on standardized tests. (Lorin recently wrote a story for Bloomberg about Temple and other institutions that have joined the test-optional movement.)

“Our mission is to provide an access to an excellent education to students from all backgrounds,” Theobald told Bloomberg Television anchor Mark Crumpton. “There are emerging data that standardized tests differentially impact people from different socioeconomic groups. … We thought it was important to look for other ways to make an admissions decision.”

In addition to Bloomberg TV and Bloomberg.com, the interview has appeared on the MSN and Yahoo websites as well as in other media outlets.
