‘Stella’ bests ‘Skyline’ in Super Bowl ad contest

ELMWOOD PARK ZOO, Norristown, Pennsylvania: As thousands of Owls anxiously waited to find out which Temple University ad would run during Super Bowl XLIX, no one was more excited than Stella the Owl, Temple University’s live mascot.

A resident of Elmwood Park Zoo and a VIP at many of Temple’s athletic events, Stella was the star in the university’s TV ad that won airtime during the Super Bowl in a contest that drew 7,163 voters over a five-day period.

Hooter the Owl was also thrilled. “It’s a proud day for Owls everywhere,” he said.

The contest launched last Tuesday, when voting was opened to Temple alumni. Buzz built throughout the week as students, faculty, staff and the public at large were invited to select which ad they thought should air.

One version of the ad, which drew 4,412 votes, ends with a dramatic shot of Stella in the Liacouras Center, turning her head to stare directly into the camera. The other version ended with a stirring nighttime shot of Temple and the Philadelphia skyline. It garnered 2,751 votes.

The ad was broadcast regionally during the game and is a part of Temple’s Take Charge campaign, which launched in the fall to showcase the university’s incredible momentum.
