If there were ever perfect days for some spring cleaning, these were it.

Temple University students, faculty and staff brightened the nearby Amos Recreation Center and beautified various areas around Main Campus on Wednesday, April 13, and Saturday, April 16—two warm and sunny spring days—as part of the ninth annual Philly Spring Cleanup.

The Philadelphia Streets Department had postponed the citywide event from its original date of April 9, when a wintry mix blew through the region. Still, two groups—Temple’s Community Service Organization and the National Council of Negro Women, Temple section—engaged in an indoor cleanup effort that day with congregants of the National Temple Baptist Church at 16th and Master streets. Temple’s Office of Community Relations organized the event.

Temple’s outdoor beautification and cleanup efforts at Amos Recreation Center, on North 16th Street, included painting backboards and benches, hanging new basketball nets, planting flowers, powerwashing the pool and sweeping up debris. A fence was also repaired.

“We couldn’t do it if it wasn’t for our students,” said Temple Capt. of Special Services Eileen Bradley, who coordinated the outdoor cleanup efforts. “Their energy and enthusiasm is what makes this type of effort so impactful and so rewarding.”

Representatives of Temple Student Government participated at the Amos cleanup, held Wednesday. On Saturday, student groups such as student government and Temple’s chapter of the international nonprofit Global Brigades helped spruce up Broad Street throughout Main Campus, as well as various other blocks west of campus. These areas included between Uber and Bouvier streets and from Oxford Street to Montgomery Avenue, as well as the area around Page and North 15th streets.

“Engaging with the community is a point of focus and pride for Temple Student Government, and we were happy to contribute to an important community resource like the Amos Recreation Center,” said outgoing student body President Ryan K. Rinaldi, who applied new coats of paint to basketball backboards and installed new nets. “Involvement in events like the Philly Spring Cleanup is something I’ll miss most about being a Temple student.”
