Video Production: Gina Benigno
For incoming kinesiology major Haneyah Carter-Johnson, move-in at Temple University was a family affair. She was joined by her mother, father, younger brother and uncle as she packed her belongings and headed north on I-95 to Johnson Hall, where she’ll live throughout her freshman year.

The oldest child in her family, Carter-Johnson was the first to leave home for college, making the experience equal parts emotional and thrilling.

“I think I’m more excited right now than nervous,” she said before hitting the road.

The experience was somewhat more bittersweet for her mother Ayanna Johnson, who said it would be difficult to adjust to her daughter leaving the nest for a new one at Temple. “[Haneyah is] part of the glue to this family, so for her to be gone is going to be hard,” she said.

“I’m just excited to see what she’s going to do, and I know she’s going to do great things,” she added.

Watch the video above to experience the anticipation, excitement and hope for what’s next for Carter-Johnson as she makes the journey from her family home near Baltimore to Philadelphia.
