A recent Gallup survey has ranked states based on their residents’ sense of overall well-being, which focuses on physical health, happiness, job satisfaction and other factors that affect quality of life. Hawaii came out on top of the rankings, while West Virginia came in last. Frank Farley, a faculty member in Temple’s College of Education, who was not connected with the survey, says: “The concept of well-being is a shorthand term that reflects all the influences on us — relationships, income, stress, work.”

The attorneys for the 14-year-olds point to evidence that a teenager's brain is not fully developed. The research comes from Laurence Steinberg, a psychology professor at Temple. "Adolescents, because of their immaturity, should not be deemed as culpable as adults,” he said. "But they also are not innocent children whose crimes should be excused."
