Temple is home for nesting hawk

A red-tailed hawk has found a place to settle down with its hatchlings at Temple. According to Temple facilities superintendent Glenn Eck, red-tailed hawks have been trying unsuccessfully to nest on campus for years. This year they found purchase on a window air unit sticking out of an unused office in Carnell Hall. There is one egg there now, which should hatch any day now.

Temple Ambler celebrates EarthFest

A crowd of 12,000 gathered at Temple University Ambler to celebrate EarthFest, an annual celebration spotlighting the importance of protecting our natural resources. Becky Lotka, a landscape architecture graduate student, hoped the children would pick up on the importance of native plants. “You can take a plant home and care for it. We’re just getting more knowledge out there about native species and what they look like,” she said.

While most people think of salads as healthy, they can actually be calorie-laden when you add things like creamy dressings and bacon bits. Michelle Conlon, a registered dietitian at Temple University Hospital, says “The darker the lettuces, the better.” For alternative sources of protein, Conlon says to choose things like chickpeas, black beans, tuna, avocado and nuts. And as far as dressings go, stay in the clear with translucent vinaigrettes.

From what we know today, who will win the presidential election in November? Christopher Wlezien, professor of political science at Temple, said the polls right now only tell half the story. At this point though, five out of the six indicators to monitor to predict the winner give a slight edge to President Obama.
