Neighborhood vandal was likely a thrill-seeker

Media Outlet:

NBC10

A Philadelphia resident arrested for slashing the tires of dozens of cars in his neighborhood, including his own, while talking openly with reporters about what he would do if he caught the alleged vandal, is likely a thrill-seeker, says Temple psychologist Frank Farley, a faculty member at Temple’s College of Education. “Thrill seekers love the attention of the news media because they capture the attention of a much larger audience,” he said.

Ruling underscores difficulty in tying cancer to cause

Media Outlet:

Philadelphia Inquirer

Joseph Snizavich died of brain cancer and his widow blamed his exposure to chemicals at a Rohm & Haas research facility. But proving a connection between the chemicals and cancer could be difficult, if a judge's ruling this week is any indication. Expert opinions must be delivered with a reasonable degree of scientific certainty, said Edward D. Ohlbaum, a professor at Temple’s Beasley School of Law. "We allow experts to do something that nobody else is able to do, and that is to state an opinion," Ohlbaum said.

New studies question whether food deserts drive obesity

Media Outlet:

WHYY’s “NewsWorks”

Two new studies have some questioning a link between so-called "food deserts" and obesity. "I think that the reason that these isolated studies got the attention they did is because they in fact were contrary to previous work, and in some ways that's interesting," said Gary Foster, director of the Center for Obesity Research and Education at Temple. "I think it would be premature to say based on these two new studies we are going to discard research from the previous two decades.”
