Tyler design student's "stunning" cosmetics campaign

Media Outlet:

Philadelphia Weekly

Over the past three months, Tyler School of Art graphic and interactive design student Alex Selig has created a faux makeup campaign for a company called Illusions Cosmetics. The campaign was initially intended to simply serve as his senior project, but quickly transformed into a work of art itself. "I knew I wanted to create a piece I was proud of, and something I could use after college. I also wanted to do something where I could incorporate photography and design skills," Selig said. "A makeup company was the perfect match."

Temple research: Teen mothers have higher rate of vaginal births

Media Outlet:

MedPage Today

A database review conducted by Dimitrios Mastrogiannis, associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at Temple's School of Medicine, indicates that the vaginal delivery rate among U.S. pregnant women under age 16 is significantly higher than among older pregnant women, despite a greater risk for obstetrical complications. "What we can't determine from this dataset is how children who are having children respond psychologically to their pregnancies and young motherhood," Mastrogiannis said.

Temple students already making a difference far from home this summer

A group of six Temple students made the trek to Sioux Falls, S.D., to help paint a nearly century-old house for the non-profit Habitat for Humanity. "Our school takes a (service immersion) trip every year and this year we chose South Dakota because it was something none of us have ever done before," said Kaitlyn Sisk, a student at Temple's Fox School of Business. "I just really want to help other people because I've been given so much with my family…and I want to share that with everyone else."

A child psychopath? It's almost impossible to diagnose, says Steinberg

Media Outlet:

Southern California Public Radio

Can a child be called a psychopath? Researchers are studying children who exhibit a distinctive lack of affect, remorse or empathy — and who are believed by some psychologists to be at risk of becoming psychopaths as adults. Temple psychologist Laurence Steinberg argues that psychopathy, like other personality disorders, is almost impossible to diagnose accurately in children because their brains are still developing and because normal behavior at these ages can be misinterpreted.

Temple Spanish prof on Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes

Media Outlet:

Philadelphia Inquirer

The Death of Artemio Cruz remains the best-known work of Carlos Fuentes, the celebrated Mexican writer who died Tuesday in Mexico City at 83. Luis Gonzáles del Valle, chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Temple, calls it "a novel about the impact of the revolution on the people and mind-set of Mexico." It stands as a lament on the tragic failure of democracy to fulfill its own promise.
