Dinnertime has become a free-for-all in many households, with packed family schedules and the television on in the background. Experts talk repeatedly about setting, and how it affects manners and behavior. This concept comes from the field of criminology. “A fancy restaurant gives off so many cues that this is a place for refined behavior,” said Ralph Taylor, a professor of criminal justice at Temple who studies how environments influence behavior. And environment changes not just the youngsters. “The parents are changed,” he added.

Twitter shows its force

In 2012, Twitter went from a 140-character narcissism telegraph to a tool of novel powers, with users warning of, and reporting on, natural disasters and helping to decide elections. "When you look back at Romney and Obama," says David Schuff, associate professor of management information systems at Temple's Fox School of Business, "swings in their social-media following were followed by similar movement in the polls. Social media is no longer in its own bubble -- it can reflect real shifts in the sentiment of the overall electorate."

Young entrepreneurs create their own opportunities

Research groups have noted an uptick in entrepreneurial activity among the young. Even if the vast majority of students never start their own businesses, entrepreneurship skills will make them more valuable to employers, said Jaine Lucas, executive director of Temple's Innovation and Entrepreneurship Institute. "They have leadership skills, the ability to team-build, the ability to incent people to be their best, the ability to survive at all costs," she said.

Temple University Press book: Examining the faces of emancipation

In a groundbreaking new book, Envisioning Emancipation: Black Americans and the End of Slavery, published by Temple University Press, the authors examine photography from the 1860s through the 1880s. "For free black people in the 19th century in the United States, photography proved to be a powerful and important way of representing themselves as Americans, as intellectuals, as artists," said Barbara Krauthamer.

Tips for raising advertising-savvy kids

‘Tis the season when retailers intensify efforts to hook customers. Sherri Hope Culver, the director of the Center for Media and Information Literacy at Temple, says kids might know when they are being targeted with TV commercials but they might not be aware of pitches directed toward them in other contexts. During this season of giving, she says, it's important for parents to talk to their kids about wants and needs, what it means to be grateful for the gifts they get and the importance of giving to others.

Temple’s 10th president takes office

Temple's incoming president, Neil D. Theobald, took office on Monday. Over the last semester, Theobald spent several days each month meeting with faculty, students, alumni and business leaders. The resounding concern from students was the cost of a college education, he said. "Affordability comes up in almost every conversation. It's a huge, huge concern. We've got to be a leader in keeping cost down."

Temple scholarship donor named Today Show "Nice Guy of the Week"

Temple scholarship donor Steven H. Korman was named Nice Guy of the Week for his surprise scholarship announcement at the Fox School of Business' Musser Awards. Korman donated $12,000 to each of 20 sophomores who were thinking that just one of them was receiving a $10,000 scholarship. "That man's going to have the best Christmas he ever had," said co-host Kathie Lee Gifford. "And so are those kids."
