Hooter takes a victory lap

After winning The Inquirer’s bracket for the most beloved mascot in the region, Hooter celebrated by waving a Temple flag through campus.

The Philadelphia Inquirer recently ran its first-ever mascot bracket for nonprofessional sports mascots in the Greater Philadelphia region. The final four presented bracket voters with strong choices: the St. Joseph’s Hawk, the Central High School Lancer, the Abington Friends Kangaroo and, of course, Temple’s very own Hooter. But the fun-loving Owl flew past the competition, winning a whopping 22.5% of all the brackets submitted.

It was an honor just to be nominated! Thank you to everyone whoooo voted for me. Let’s gooooo Owls!

“Hooter is an instantly recognizable symbol of our students’ and our student-athletes’ tenacity and drive,” said Temple University President Richard Englert. “It’s gratifying to see Hooter recognized by the Philadelphia community in this way and learn that he’s cherished throughout the region.”

As part of the contest, the Inquirer will present Temple with a $1,000 donation and a banner to hang in the rafters.

Not only is Hooter a beloved mascot here on campus, but he also represents a larger enthusiasm for Temple sports and Owl pride throughout the region. “Hooter is a fan favorite, so it’s no surprise that he won the mascot bracket,” said Arthur Johnson, vice president and Debbie and Stanley Lefkowitz ’65 Director of Athletics. “Hooter plays an important role in keeping the crowds’ and student-athletes’ spirits high. That’s why it’s great that he’s earned this honor.”

Hooter’s victory in the mascot bracket is a point of pride for students, staff, faculty and fans alike. Junior advertising major Avery Bumsted said “Hooter’s energy is one of a kind! Whenever Hooter is around everyone feels uplifted, I am so excited he is being awarded for his dedication to our community.”

To celebrate his triumph, Hooter took a championship flight around campus. Temple Now followed along to capture some iconic moments along his route.

The flight began at Hooter’s home, The Liacouras Center, where Hooter donned his most elegant blazer for the occasion.

He then carried the Temple flag past Pearson-McGonigle...

...across Broad Street...

...past Charles Library...

...down Pollett Walk...

...until he finally landed at the Bell Tower.

“It was an honor just to be nominated!” Hooter said. “Thank you to everyone whoooo voted for me. Let’s gooooo Owls!”
