Be a RecycleManiac

Last Sunday, Jan. 18, marked the start of the RecycleMania Competition — a 10-week, nationwide campus competition to increase recycling participation and heighten awareness of waste management and recycling. The competition will run through March 28, and the Office of Sustainability is calling on all members of the Temple community, on all campuses, to pitch in and recycle during this time.

This year, recycling in Temple buildings has been made even easier, with the transition to only two types of recycling containers. Instead of having to separate plastic, glass and aluminum into different containers, recyclers can now just drop their mixed bottles and cans into the blue containers, and their mixed papers into the white containers. In addition, two recycling dumpsters will be located on Main Campus (at Barton Hall and Beury Hall) to make it easier for the Temple community to recycle when traveling across campus.

To help kick off the competition, two events will be held on Main Campus on Wednesday, Jan. 28 to raise awareness about waste minimization strategies and recycling opportunities at Temple. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., “Recycle Mountain” will be held at the Bell Tower. For the event, recyclables will be taken from student residence halls and then displayed to give the Temple community an idea of the amount of materials that are currently being recycled. And from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., an information fair will be held in the atrium of the Howard Gittis Student Center.

Temple’s RecycleMania efforts and events are being coordinated by the Office of Sustainability, Facilities Management, the Recycling Office, Student Affairs, Sodexo and a number of student organizations.
