Fox, Tyler students start classes in dramatic new spaces

The start of classes earlier this week for students in both the Tyler School of Art and Fox School of Business was state of the art — and far from business as usual. Both groups began the semester in long-awaited new facilities that opened for occupancy over the winter break.

At Alter Hall, Fox students marveled at the magnificent video wall, which flashes a steady broadcast of Fox announcements and national business news, and explored the building’s many gathering places. The $79 million facility features innovations in smart classroom design, one of the longest stock tickers in the United States, a trading room/business simulation center and other technology for teaching and learning designed to prepare students for the technology-enabled business world they will face.

Located at 13th Street and Montgomery Avenue, the building will be officially dedicated at an April 20 ribbon cutting.

Meanwhile, two blocks north, a dramatic new Tyler School of Art opened its doors at 13th and Norris streets. The building features a bright, two-story central

corridor, ample display space, new studios and a grassy courtyard overlooked by a cafe. In addition, its proximity to nearby theater and music buildings creates a dynamic arts commons that will encourage collaboration among students in the creative disciplines.

The opening of the building also brought Tyler students who had formerly taken their major courses in Elkins Park into the bustle of Main Campus to begin full-time study in the $75 million facility.

Tyler’s new home will be officially inaugurated at a March 25 ceremony.
