Give a hoot for the birthday bird

Story has it that the owl, a nocturnal hunter, was initially adopted as Temple’s symbol because the university began as a night school for ambitious young people in Philadelphia.

Although it’s certain that Hooter has been the official mascot of Temple for quite some time, just how long that’s been is hard to determine.

Perhaps it’s true that, as one person suggested, “a wise owl never reveals his true age.”

Hooter’s birthday party will take place at the men’s basketball game as they battle the University of Massachusetts on Sunday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m.

Friends of Hooter’s — other area sports team mascots — will also join in the festivities.

Anyone in attendance will receive a free slice of birthday cake after the game and the first 2,000 kids age 14 and under will get a free Temple basketball replica jersey, courtesy of the Philadelphia Federal Credit Union, as a party favor.

In addition, the game has also been declared a Temple Employee Day, which means employees save $5 off each ticket.
