Green events set stage for celebration of Sustainability Day

Temple University Sustainability Day

Representatives of The City of Philadelphia Recycling Office hand out recycling containers as part of last years's celebration of Campus Sustainability Day. Events will again be held on Temple's main, Ambler and Podiatry School campuses on Oct 21.

October may offer the muted hues of fall foliage, but Temple will be awash in green through much of the month. The university’s celebration of the eighth annual Campus Sustainability Day will extend for more than a week, with a series of lectures, concerts, demonstrations and green Homecoming celebrations leading up to an Oct. 20 centerpiece event. Members of the university community will have an opportunity to discuss global warming, explore alternative fuel vehicles, work on a service project, and take in presentations on urban ecology and sustainable graphic design. Highlighted events include:

Paley Library Lecture Hall

One of the nation’s leading climatologists, Michael Mann faced controversy in 2009 when documents and emails written by him and other leading climatologists were made public. Although the Pennsylvania State University cleared Mann of any wrongdoing, “Climategate” remains a potent example of the politicization of science. Sponsored by Paley Library and the Center for Humanities.

Learn about alternative vehicles and how society can reduce its dependence on oil. Vehicles will be on display throughout the day. Sponsored by the Office of Sustainability and the Philadelphia Clean Cities Program.

Campus Consciousness Tour

Half rock tour, half environmental campaign, CCT includes many greening elements and is staged with a minimal environmental impact. Passion Pit, K. Flay and Black Joe Lewis will perform. Tickets are $10 with TUid. Sponsored by University Student Activities and Main Campus Programming Board.

Presented by the School of Communications and Theater.

“Sustainable Graphic Design:

Myth or a responsibility?”

Oct. 19. 12:30-1:50 p.m.
