Homemade earthquake kicks off CST's anniversary celebration

College of Science and Technology Dean Hai-Lung Dai helped more than 100 third and fourth graders from Tanner Duckrey Elementary School to generate a “homemade earthquake” as part of the kickoff to the college’s week-long 10th Anniversary Celebration.

The Bell Tower served as the “earthquake epicenter” as participants—led by Dai, men’s basketball coach Fran Dunphy, Franklin Institute chief astronomer Derrick Pitts—jumped up and down in an attempt to cause seismic activity. The vibrations were monitored and measured by Earth and Environmental Science faculty and graduate students using a portable seismograph and projected on two large LCD screens so participants could watch the results of their efforts.

The event, coordinated by EES Professor Jonathan Nyquist, was a fun and educational way to teach the school children about science and earthquakes. Other events during CST’s anniversary celebration include the College’s first-ever job fair; a wine tasting; a reunion of CST’s 1950-59 classes; distinguished lectures and a Kimmel Center concert featuring the Ambler Symphony Orchestra, with Dai serving as guest conductor.
