A look at commencement’s history and traditions

University commencement ceremonies are steeped in tradition, from the awarding of degrees to the academic regalia worn by graduates on the big day. As Temple University students, faculty and staff prepare for 123rd Commencement Exercises, the ceremony’s chief marshal, Professor of Law Jan Ting, explains the attributes and history of the cap and gown and other important parts of the commencement ritual.

Temple’s commencement will be held on Thursday, May 13 at 10 a.m. in the Liacouras Center. Afterward, the university’s schools and colleges will hold their own ceremonies for those receiving degrees. For a full list and additional information, visit the Commencement 2010 website.
