Staley featured in The Black List documentary

After conquering the basketball court, Temple Head Coach Dawn Staley is now looking to make her mark on the big and small screens. Staley is part of The Black List, a documentary featuring prominent black Americans discussing life, their professions and what it was like growing up as a person of color in America.

Employing a host of media vehicles including film, music and portraiture, The Black List presents the stories of 30 of the most inspirational and influential African-Americans of our time. Staley joins celebrities such as Russell Simmons, Chris Rock, the Rev. Al Sharpton, Kareem Abdul-Jabar, Barack Obama, Halle Berry, Quincy Jones, Serena and Venus Williams and Sydney Poitier in this groundbreaking project.

The documentary premiered on Jan. 22 at the Sundance Film Festival. It has also been acquired for television by HBO, slated for a September air date. A limited theatrical run of the film in Los Angeles and New York is planned for this summer.

In addition, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston will exhibit the participants' portraits — taken by world-renowned photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders. The portraits, along with the film, will be displayed this summer in Houston, as well as in various cities across the country.

Created by Greenfield-Sanders and critically acclaimed entertainment critic and NPR host Elvis Mitchell, The Black List will also be shown on college campuses and in primary and secondary schools as part of its black history curriculum. Working with an in-school meal program, which delivers healthy meals to millions of low-income school children every day, The Black List program will be featured on the back of millions of boxes a week for a three-month period following the curriculum’s launch in February.
