Temple arts preview: Fall 2008

Autumn arts calendar features international showcase

Temple is well recognized for consistently providing high quality artistic experiences influenced by a range of cultures, and this fall’s arts agenda reflects that tradition with its diverse mix of global-themed offerings. From master music classes led by European composers to dance performances by the Yu Wei Chinese Dance Collection, the arts, dance, theater and music calendar for the fall semester includes several events that provide a glimpse into cultures from around the world.

In October, several noted alumnae will return to Temple to take part in the Dance Alumni Showcase. Scheduled for Conwell Dance Theater, the performance will feature dance works by Boyer College of Music and Dance alumnae Joselli Deans, Tina Heuges, Ramaa Ramesh and Ashley Suttlar Martin.

Prior to the showcase, Deans, who earned her master’s degree in dance education at Temple, will present “Black Ballerinas Dancing on the Edge: An Analysis of the Cultural Politics in Delores Browne’s and Raven Wilkenson’s Careers, 1954-1985.”

The theater season kicks off with the Philadelphia premiere of Expecting Isabel. Directed by Doug Wager, professor of theater, the stage play follows a couple on a journey toward parenthood.

The season continues with several off–campus musical performances, including a December program featuring the Temple University Jazz and Lab bands at the Philadelphia Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.

Temple’s arts offerings continually provide the university and surrounding community with a variety of artistic options, including dance, music, theater and opera performances; student, faculty and local artist exhibitions; visiting authors; and master classes with professional musicians. Below is a sampling. For updated times, locations and ticketing information, visit the web sites listed below or check the TUcalendar at http://calendar.temple.edu.
