Temple Theaters presents ‘Damn Yankees’
Temple Theaters continues its 2008-09 season with a production of Damn Yankees, a Tony award-winning musical by George Abbott and Douglas Wallop, with music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross. Directed by Peter Reynolds, with costume designs by Marie Anne Chiment, the all-American baseball musical chronicles an aging fan’s dream to turn his favorite losing team into World Series champs. In order to make his dream come true, he makes a deal with the devil to trade his average Joe life for a successful baseball career. In 2007, Abbott’s widow Joy bequeathed her ownership share of rights and future royalties earned by theater productions authored by Abbott to Temple University for establishment of the George and Joy Abbott Center for Musical Theater, a collaborative program between the Boyer College of Music and Dance and the School of Communications and Theater. “We are thrilled to present a show written and originally directed by ‘Mr. Broadway’ Himself: George Abbott,” said Reynolds. “Mr. Abbott's widow, Joy Abbott, has granted Temple University a generous gift that will ensure the vitality of musical theater at Temple for years to come. We celebrate the memory of Mr. Abbott, his enduring contributions to the American Theater, and the Abbott family legacy here at Temple University.” |
