Turn up the volume; Temple offers news and info you can see and hear

News and information about Temple can now be heard and seen.

Last September, the Office of News Communications, which produces Temple Times, Temple Today, TUcalendar and the Online Newsroom, began enriching its stories about university faculty, staff, students and the community with the addition of audiocasts and slideshows.

At the same time, to showcase videos produced by Temple students, staff and faculty, the Office of Web Communications launched an official Temple University channel on YouTube.

“As much as some of us still relish the morning newspaper, more and more people are getting their news and information online,” said Ray Betzner, assistant vice president of university communications. “With busy schedules and information overload, people have less time to read and want the option of watching a video or listening to a podcast.”

Here are some of the news experiences now available:

Audiocasts

Two new audiocasts will be posted each month and featured in Temple Today, the university’s daily electronic newsletter. All audiocasts, identified by a listen button , can be found on the Online Newsroom, where you can also subscribe to news feeds.

Can the pen be mightier than the sword?, a story and audiocast posted today, explores the work of Stephen Lepore, a professor of public health in the College of Health Professions. Lepore studies how people adjust to traumatic or chronic stressors in their lives, including cancer diagnosis and treatments, bereavement and exposure to community violence.

Videos

With 23 videos organized into six “Playlists” (YouTube’s word for categories), Temple’s YouTube channel has had almost 1,600 views, with the videos capturing over 6,296 views. And it’s growing in popularity with viewers; 45 subscribers have signed up to get notification of new video uploads.

“We’d like to increase both the number and variety of videos on the Temple channel,” said Mary Beth Kurilko, director of web communications. “We’re interested in showing all aspects of Temple life: academic, social and community.”
