A tragic evening
Dear Students and Colleagues,
It is with profound sadness that I inform you of a loss within our Temple University community. Late last evening, a Temple student was tragically killed in an act of gun violence. At approximately 11 p.m., the student was shot in the area of the 1500 block of North Carlisle Street and was immediately transported to Temple University Hospital. Despite the best efforts of medical personnel, the student succumbed to their injuries shortly thereafter.
On behalf of the entire Temple community, I want to express my deepest sympathies to the student’s family. I am heartbroken by the senseless loss of such a young life. This tragedy is difficult to comprehend, and my thoughts and prayers are with all who are grieving. Out of respect for the student’s family and friends, we are not releasing their identity at this time.
I am grateful for the efforts of our brave police officers from the Department of Public Safety, who swiftly responded along with the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD). A suspected shooter, who is also a Temple student, is in custody. We will continue to support the PPD, as they take the lead on the investigation moving forward.
A loss like this is deeply painful for the Temple community, and we recognize the impact our student’s loss of life will have on their family, friends, and all who knew them. We encourage students to take advantage of the support services available to them at Tuttleman Counseling Services, located at 1700 N. Broad St. More information on their services and hours of operation is available at 215-204-7276 or through the Tuttleman website.
For faculty and staff, our Employee Assistance Program is available 24/7, providing support and resources online or by calling 1-888-267-8126. Temple's Psychological Services Center is also available at psc@temple.edu or 215-204-7100.
As we grieve the loss of this student, I hope that we can find comfort and support in one another and in the strength of our Temple community.
Sincerely,
John Fry
