Incident at Cecil B. Moore subway station

To the Temple community,

Last night, shortly after 8:30 p.m., police officers with the Temple University Department of Public Safety (TUDPS), SEPTA and the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) responded to reports of shots fired on the platform of the Broad Street and Cecil B. Moore SEPTA station. Upon arriving, they found that a young person not associated with Temple had suffered gunshot wounds to his leg. He was transferred to a nearby medical facility, and thankfully, his injuries are not expected to be life threatening.

In the wake of the incident, TUDPS and PPD police officers worked diligently to identify potential suspects and persons of interest, and because of their efforts, three individuals were taken into custody. As always, we are grateful for the officers' quick response to this incident, which prevented further harm to both the Temple and North Philadelphia communities.

Because the incident occurred on the SEPTA underground platform, students were nearby at the time. We recognize the alarming and unsettling nature of incidents like this and urge all members of our community to take care of themselves.

Students who are impacted should seek support through Tuttleman Counseling Services, located at 1700 N. Broad Street. For information, call 215-204-7276 or visit the Tuttleman Counseling Services website. For faculty and staff members, our employee assistance program offers support and resources 24/7 online or call 1-888-267-8126.

Once again, I thank our law enforcement agencies for their quick response last night. I also encourage all members of the Temple community to become familiar with the university’s available safety resources, like the walking escort program and Flight. More safety resources can be found at safety.temple.edu. The Temple Police can also be contacted at any time by dialing 215-204-1234.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Griffin
Vice President for Public Safety and Chief of Police
