Conclusion of NCAA review

Dear Members of the Temple Community,

Earlier today, the NCAA concluded its review of Temple University’s men’s basketball program, formally closing an 18-month investigation that began in March 2024 following allegations of point shaving.

After a complete and thorough joint investigation, the NCAA found no evidence of point shaving or any wrongdoing by the university. From the outset, Temple’s administration and Athletics Department staff fully cooperated with the NCAA’s enforcement staff—making available all relevant witnesses, documents and electronic devices—to ensure the process was thorough, transparent and complete.

While the investigation made no findings against Temple related to competition integrity, it revealed several Level III institutional violations. Specifically, the findings include

  • instances of former coaching staff members and student-athletes engaging in wagering on sporting events, including one former student-athlete who placed parlay bets on Temple games, which totaled $473.
  • a former assistant coach providing nominal extra benefits to student-athletes.

This conduct does not align with Temple’s expectations or the NCAA’s bylaws. Upon learning of these issues, Temple promptly took appropriate remedial actions. The university remains committed to comprehensive compliance education for all athletics personnel to ensure continued adherence to NCAA and conference standards.

We take seriously our responsibility to uphold the integrity of intercollegiate athletics. At the same time, we recognize that college sports are evolving rapidly, particularly in the era of name, image and likeness (NIL) opportunities and shifting understandings of student-athlete welfare. As such, Temple respectfully believes that responses to violations should reflect both the letter and the spirit of fairness that define the modern collegiate landscape.

Temple has always prided itself on playing by the rules and doing things the right way. We are grateful that this process has affirmed the honesty and integrity of our student-athletes and the university’s commitment to compliance. We accept accountability for the findings, which have been submitted as a Level III violation for the university at the direction of the enforcement staff. The NCAA also released information related to the resolution of other cases today involving individuals formerly associated with Temple. Those violations will not result in additional penalties to the university. Temple will continue to work collaboratively with the NCAA to ensure our program remains a model for integrity and transparency.

As we close this chapter, our focus turns to the future—to supporting our student-athletes in the classroom, in competition and in the community while continuing to build upon Temple’s proud tradition of excellence in all we do.

Sincerely,

John Fry
