Interim Senior Vice President and Provost Richard M. Englert has announced three new appointments: Michael R. Sitler as interim dean of the College of Health Professions and Social Work (CHPSW), Jodi Levine Laufgraben as vice provost for Academic Affairs and Assessment and Vicki Lewis McGarvey as vice provost for University College.

“The College of Health Professions and Social Work, with its outstanding faculty and students, is one of Temple’s gems,” said Englert. “Michael Sitler, a visionary leader who has been an important member of outgoing Dean Ron Brown’s team, is the perfect choice for interim dean. I have great confidence that under his direction the college will continue to shine.”

Sitler will assume his new position on July 15, 2010. Brown will be leaving to assume the position of provost at Wayne State University.

As a professor and chair of Kinesiology since 1988, Sitler has worked to develop the infrastructure that has led Kinesiology to receive $1 million per year in research funding. During the last five years he helped department enrollment grow to 800 matriculated students and recently has been leading the effort to reorganize student services within the college. He also served as a co-chair of the university’s successful Middle States re-accreditation process.

“It’s been an amazing journey to see where the College of Health Professions and Social Work has come from and where we are going,” said Sitler. “At this crucial point in the college’s transformation, through the collective work of faculty and staff, I look forward to leading the college on its path to continued greatness.”

Laufgraben, through her leadership during our recent Middle States re-accreditation and the university’s first cycle of successful periodic reviews, is the ideal person to continue directing these essential efforts.”

As vice provost for Academic Affairs and Assessment, Laufgraben will oversee accreditation management, periodic program review and assessment planning. She will facilitate outcomes assessment across the university, working with schools and colleges throughout all stages of academic program development and change.

Laufgraben, who has been at Temple since 1990, has been associate vice provost and director of Periodic Program Review since 2004. She assumed her new position on July 1.

“This new leadership position for University College emphasizes the importance of our regional campuses and of extending our offerings beyond traditional modes of learning,” said Englert. “Vicki Lewis McGarvey’s many years of experience in both the Office of the President and Provost will make her an effective leader for Temple in this new role.”

As vice provost for University College, McGarvey will oversee the Ambler Campus, Temple University Center City, the Fort Washington Center, Temple University Harrisburg, Extension Services and Distance Learning and Summer Programs. She will work with the schools, colleges and other administrative offices to expand and promote initiatives for adults and veterans, distance learning and summer programs.

McGarvey came to the university in 2001 as associate vice provost. Since 2006, as associate vice president for academic and faculty affairs, she has advised President Ann Weaver Hart on all academic matters and has been a leader in academic planning and evaluation. She assumed her new position on July 1.
