In an opinion piece, Corrinne Caldwell, chair of the State Board of Education’s Health and Wellness Committee and a professor at Temple University, and co-author Joseph Torsella commented on what they refer to as a real health emergency—the fact that today’s schoolchildren are part of what might be the first generation with a shorter life expectancy than its predecessor. “Healthier food options, student-level targets for physical activity, and an end to self-defeating and ineffective disciplinary policies are goals that deserve support from educators, parents, policy makers and students,” they write.
