The question of age is being raised in the Supreme Court this year where the practice of sentencing young people under age 14 to life in prison without parole is being challenged. Brain science has been central to the debate. Laurence Steinberg of Temple University is considered among the foremost experts in the field. He explained why juveniles lack control: "The teenage brain is like a car with a good accelerator but a weak brake. With powerful impulses under poor control, the likely result is a crash."
