Dorothy Height, the behind-the scenes heroine of the civil rights movement and women's movement died this week at 98. Bettye Collier-Thomas, professor of history at Temple, includes the former president of the National Council of Negro Women in her new book, Jesus, Jobs and Justice: African American Women and Religion. "Dorothy Height graduated from NYU during the Depression and rose through the ranks of the YWCA, a central organization when you are talking about women rising up through the ranks of power and influence and enabling advocacy. She had opportunities others did not have," said Collier-Thomas.
