A bit of mystery is woven through the history of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. "The story is that Bach put together a set of six concertos, all for the margrave of Brandenburg," said Steven Zohn, associate professor at Temple's Boyer College of Music and Dance. The pieces, which demonstrate a range of innovative forms and instrumentation, are different from each other and from other concertos of the time. "We don't really know if Bach was trying to get a job or money, and stylistically some people claim that some of the pieces could have been ten years old at the time. So, he may have opened a drawer, rummaged around for some old pieces or maybe composed some new material here or there, stuck them together and said 'here's the set,'" Zohn said.M
