An unusual weight loss program promises to help you lose a lot of weight, and fast. The program involves a daily self-injection of HCG, a hormone found in pregnant women, along with a low-calorie diet consisting of lean proteins and vegetables. Gary Foster, director of Temple's Center for Obesity Research and Education, says this diet concerns him. "HCG is a hormone normally secreted during pregnancy. The effects of injecting this hormone into people who are not pregnant are unknown," he said. According to Foster, studies show patients are losing weight because they're only consuming 500 calories a day. "The diet is what's driving weight loss, not the HCG."
