AP: Tokyo power company looks to law to save itself

Despite the nuclear disaster in which the Tokyo Electric Power Co. is embroiled, some analysts say the company which is better known as TEPCO will probably survive and might even go on to prosper. That's not to say the utility won't end up paying for the radiation leaks and other disruptions from its Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, but TEPCO will likely seek limits on its liability based on Japan's 1961 Act on Compensation for Nuclear Damage. "Everything hinges on the law," said Paul Scalise of Temple University, Japan Campus, who has studied Japan's power industry. "TEPCO will go bankrupt otherwise."
