A team of Temple graduate students has spent the past six weeks excavating the yard behind Washington's Headquarters at Valley Forge. On the first day of their dig they located a trench where they believe the first log was laid to build Washington's dining cabin. There have been many volunteers on site, helping sift soil and search for artifacts. Pottery, ammunition, even teeth are among the items found and described to tour groups. "Most people have never had the chance to visit an active archaeological site, much less one where the archaeologist will stop working and talk to them, but we are more than happy to do that," said archeologist Joe Blondino, a Temple doctoral student.
