Temple archaeologists believe they have found Timbuctoo, a town founded by freed slaves, in Burlington County. Experts say it is one of the most important finds regarding African-American history in the nation. Temple archeologists have unearthed hundreds of artifacts as well as a house, one of at least 18 believed to be on the four-acre site. "What I like about this site is it is a community that lasted for a long time, and then disappeared, and it disappeared with all of its stuff," said Temple anthropologist David Orr. The Timbuctoo site "narrows in on one slice of Americana: How African-Americans coped in the eastern United States from 1830 to 1930," said Orr.
