In a groundbreaking new book, Envisioning Emancipation: Black Americans and the End of Slavery, published by Temple University Press, the authors examine photography from the 1860s through the 1880s. "For free black people in the 19th century in the United States, photography proved to be a powerful and important way of representing themselves as Americans, as intellectuals, as artists," said Barbara Krauthamer.
