Graduates wearing their caps and gowns don’t have much freedom when it comes to style. But in her eight years as a Temple University photographer, Betsy Manning discovered that students have been finding ways to express their individuality below the hemline — with shoes. Manning documented the parade of shoes at this year’s Commencement by setting up a miniature red carpet on the loading dock at Temple’s Liacouras Center. Her shots captured all types of footwear, from glittering wedges to dress shoes emblazoned with a white “T” on one foot and a red “U” on the other. “People are going to find a way to individualize what they wear,” Manning said, “and Temple graduates never let me down.”
