An update on enrollment

To the Temple community,

I am pleased to share an encouraging update as we continue the work to strengthen our enrollment and set Temple on a sustainable path moving forward. In undergraduate, graduate and international admissions, we are seeing positive indicators that are a testament to the work of countless people across the university and the excitement among prospective students and their families about Temple University.

April 1 was our undergraduate application deadline and we have received 39,681 applications, a new Temple University record.

The division of Enrollment Management, under the leadership of Vice Provost for Enrollment Management Jose Aviles, and staff members and faculty across our many schools and colleges have been working diligently to pursue a robust strategy to invigorate Temple University’s enrollment. The strategy has led to the reimagination of the recruitment and admissions process, with a keen focus on meeting prospective students where they are. To that point, we have increased recruitment visits to schools by 80% over last year at this time, revamped our marketing and communications strategy, strengthened diversity outreach, and hosted many more prospective students and their families on campus.

This is the direct result of the hard work and collaboration of colleagues across campus to ensure that we are in a strong place as we build toward the fall semester. It is still early, and there is still much work to be done. I would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard, been willing to try new approaches, and collaborated to get us to this point.

As we continue to recruit the Class of 2028 and see growing strength across our applicant pool, I would like to share a few highlights:

  • Internationally, we continue to see impressive growth. Already, first year international enrollment for fall 2023 was up 21% from last year. For fall 2024, international applications are up 20%.
  • Our primacy in the region remains strong as we have received a record number of applications from the City of Philadelphia.
  • Our appeal outside of Pennsylvania also continues to grow. We have received a record number of out-of-state applications as well.

We are also seeing positive indicators with regard to graduate enrollment. Completed master's applications are up 6% and doctoral applications are up 16.8%.

As I noted, there is more work to do. But we hear from applicants that what has drawn them to Temple is our academic excellence, affordability and mission of delivering value for students. This value comes from the hard work of our exceptional faculty and staff, and most importantly, it shows what we can accomplish when we work together on behalf of this remarkable university.

Thank you for all you do on behalf of Temple University, and best of luck to you as the spring semester moves towards completion.

Sincerely,

Gregory N. Mandel
Senior Vice President and Provost
