Remembering JoAnne A. Epps, one year later

To the Temple community,

Exactly one year ago today, we all endured one of the most difficult days in our university’s history when then-President JoAnne A. Epps tragically passed away.

Death anniversaries are not occasions that are typically celebrated. For many of us who have suffered the loss of a loved one, these are some of the most challenging days of the calendar year. Yet, in reflecting upon the past year, it would be inappropriate to let this day pass, without acknowledging the enormous positive influence that JoAnne continues to have on this university.

JoAnne was a brilliant, kind and thoughtful leader who represented the very best of Temple. In the wake of her passing, we shared that her beliefs, her values and her priorities will continue to serve as Temple’s North Star and guide this institution moving forward. Now, one year later, we have continued to follow her lead, and her influence has arguably never been more evident.

This year, at Convocation, all incoming Temple students received a T-shirt that included words of wisdom from JoAnne. JoAnne was a gifted grammarian who loved words, making this shirt the perfect way to introduce a new generation of Temple students to one of this institution’s most beloved figures.

I want to take a moment to highlight the phrases that were included on the shirt. I also invite you to consider some of these phrases and see if you can put at least one of them into action today. I know that is exactly what JoAnne would want.

  • Give, share, contribute
  • Be curious
  • Always see possibilities
  • Learn from failures
  • Absorb, learn, grow
  • Explore the city
  • Try new things
  • Meet your neighbors
  • Celebrate success
  • Support fellow Owls
  • Seek big futures
  • Push yourself
  • Take bold actions

These words describe exactly how JoAnne lived her life and the lessons we can learn from her.

One year ago, we promised that JoAnne and her spirit would continue to guide us. It is a promise that remains intact today and I hope you will join me in ensuring that it will continue tomorrow and forever.

Sincerely,

Richard M. Englert
