New Department of Education guidance

Dear Colleagues,

This continues to be a dynamic and challenging time for colleges and universities, with new guidance from Washington coming frequently. Over the weekend, the Department of Education released a Dear Colleague letter on the nondiscrimination obligations of schools and other institutions that receive federal funding. Temple is carefully reviewing this guidance and taking extra care to confirm that our policies and practices are in compliance with applicable law.

As I’ve stated previously, Temple’s mission is to provide educational access and experiential opportunities to individuals from every walk of life, especially those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college. Our university community represents a wide variety of cultures, backgrounds and perspectives, and it makes Temple a better place to learn and work. We create an environment that encourages thoughtful dialogues that include and respect all stakeholder perspectives, in careful adherence to the law.

In light of the directives and guidance from the federal government, the university has brought together internal and independent external resources to ensure that our policies and practices align with all legal requirements while staying true to our mission and values. This work is ongoing and will continue to evolve as new guidance emerges.

I will update you on our progress and appreciate your support and patience during these uncertain and unsettling times.

Sincerely,

John Fry
President
