Federal officials visited Temple’s Student Center on Saturday to hear the perspectives of local nonprofits, community groups and students as part of the White House’s 19th Hispanic Community Action Summit, which connects administration officials with the public to create action plans based on issues of importance to the community.

OSHA rules on workplace toxics stalled

OSHA is unable to act with urgency on well-known workplace hazards. A plan to address the toxic hazard silica has been tied up for 15 years. Ian Greaves, a physician and professor of public health at Temple, said recent studies show that even modest silica exposures heighten the risk of lung cancer. "It appears that any degree of lung fibrosis increases the risk," he said.
