Brown named director of the student-athlete advising center
Temple University has named Ellen Henderson Brown as the director of the Center of Academic Advising and Support for Student-Athletes, Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw has announced.
“Temple University is quite fortunate to have someone with the kind of successful experience that Dr. Ellen Brown brings to our student-athlete academic advising program,” Bradshaw said. “I am confident that Dr. Brown will help establish our academic program as one of the elite in Division I athletics.” “Dr. Ellen Henderson Brown brings to Temple the ideal mix of skills and experience needed to lead the Provost’s Office’s new center for academic support of student-athletes,” said Peter Jones, vice provost for undergraduate studies. “Dr. Brown was a varsity college swimmer, has experience in working in student athletic programs at Maryland and Oregon State, and has a strong background in academic advising. She is also an experienced administrative leader. Above all, she brings a strong commitment to fostering student success — both in the classroom and in athletic competition.” The Center for Academic Advising and Support for Student-Athletes monitors the progress of all student-athletes. From the recruiting stage through graduation, the office provides academic counseling, mentoring and tutoring to approximately 575 student-athletes. It is the center’s mission to ensure the academic integrity of the institution by continually educating the student-athletes on NCAA and university policies and to encourage informed decision making, offer guidance and support and assist student-athletes in managing their individual progress to promote academic excellence. “I am thrilled to return to the Temple University community,” Brown said. “Serving as the director for academic advising and support allows me to incorporate my strong passion for the academic success of student-athletes with my previous experience and education. It is very exciting to have the opportunity to make significant positive impact in this role.” Brown, who earned her doctorate from Temple in May, previously served as the director for the division of undergraduate studies at Penn State University, Abington College.
