Dissent in America Teach-In: Pinkwashing- Isreal's Queer Propaganda War (3/2/2012)
Main Campus - Anderson Hall This is a weekly forum examining the historical background and context of contemporary issues. This week's teach-in features activist, journalist, and author Sherry Wolf on "'Pinkwashing': Israel's Queer Propaganda." Pinkwashing is a term used to describe the attempt by Israel to clean up its image on Palestinian human rights through misleading and exploiting the LGBTQ community. In the last few years, as part of this attempt to re-brand Israel as a “progressive democracy,” the Foreign Ministry and other Israel advocacy organizations have begun promoting Israel’s support for gay rights as part of its supposedly advanced culture in order to combat Israel's handling of Palestinians. Sherry Wolf is a public speaker, writer and activist who is the Associate Editor of the International Socialist Review where she has written on U.S. imperialism, gender, sexuality and the history of the left. She is also the author of Sexuality and Socialism: History, Politics and Theory of LGBT Liberation. This week's teach-in is in co-sponsored by Temple Students for Justice in Palestine and Temple Queer Student Union. |
