Jeffrey Kahn, John Hopkins University, Berman Institute of Bioethics, chaired the Committee on “The Use of Chimpanzees in Biomedical and Behavioral Research” for the Institute of Medicine at the National Academies (IOM) to investigate NIH guidelines that permitted biomedical research on chimpanzees. Under the new committee guidelines, current biomedical studies using chimpanzees would fail to meet the standards, which must be essential to human health; no other research model exists; and the animals must be maintained in ethologically appropriate physical and social environments. Dr. Kahn will speak about this landmark decision in animal rights and the lens through which society views the rights of other species.
