In the age of texting and tweeting, English grammar may seem like it's on the road to extinction. How can teachers fight back? Many still teach grammar by getting students to diagram sentences. Michael W. Smith, a professor in Temple's College of Education and co-author of Getting It Right: Fresh Approaches to Teaching Grammar, Usage and Correctness, isn't a fan of diagramming sentences. "It doesn't do any good. Diagramming sentences only teaches students how to diagram sentences," he said.
