On the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, are we better off than we were in 1970? "I think it's a mixed bag," said Jeffrey Featherstone, director of Temple's Center for Sustainable Communities. "Forty years ago we had some pretty serious problems. We had rivers that were on fire, we had cities where the air pollution was so bad we couldn't breathe. We fixed most of those problems. Now we've got some more complicated problems to deal with like global warming — politically charged problems that are pretty tough to deal with."
