As kids head back to school there are plenty of things they need, but one of the things they want is a cell phone. So, how early is too early? Renee Hobbs, a professor at Temple's School of Communications and Theater and director of Temple's Media Education Lab, says that in general, it's best to hold off for as long as possible — into middle school or even high school. "Parents need to be aware of the characteristics of the phones. Kids use phones to take photos, pinpoint their location via the geocode, listen to music and play games. It's important for parents to set rules about appropriate use of cell phones. And, more importantly, to enforce those rules."
