Burlington County Times
For decades, people told stories about a freed slave settlement in Burlington County called Timbuctoo that vanished from existence almost 100 years ago. Archeologists now have solid evidence that those stories are true. An ongoing archeological dig by Temple graduate student Christopher Barton has revealed a brick structure believed to be one of many houses in the tiny village, which was formed in the 1800s before the Civil War. "We knew what was here from the geophysical map," Barton said, "but actually seeing this come to fruition is completely different. It tells a story of improvisation and resistance. We had a good idea what was here but, wow. It's completely different actually seeing it."
