While it’s easy to blame bankers for the so-called credit crunch that some say is choking small business, the evidence tells a different story. Bankers are actually loaning money at an improved rate, according to the latest data, even though credit quality is less than robust. Many of the businesses seeking credit — and then complaining because they can’t get it — need the money to fix cash-flow problems related to anemic sales. “Many firms are desperate for survival cash, but many will not survive even with a free government loan,” said Temple University economist William Dunkelberg.
