CHPSW research explores state distracted-driving laws nationwide

Every year, hundreds of thousands of car accidents in the U.S. are caused by drivers who text or talk while behind the wheel, prompting lawmakers in many states to pass laws regulating the use of cell phones and other devices while driving. A new study conducted by Temple researchers revealed that these laws and their penalties vary greatly in content and effectiveness. "Our study is the first step toward understanding which laws really do reduce distracted driving, and thus can reduce related crashes and associated injuries and fatalities," said lead author Jennifer Ibrahim, an assistant professor of public health.
